What is surface preparation?

The process of treating the surface of a substance is for the purpose of increasing its adhesion to metallic coatings, organic coatings, and inorganic coatings.

The single most important factor influencing coating performance is the quality of surface preparation.

Benefits of using laser technology for surface preparation:

  • If a surface is properly prepped and ready to receive a coating or sealant, you will use less sealant.
  • Increases adhesive bond strength on composite surfaces.
  • Decreased damage to the carbon fibers in the composite material.
  • Precise roughness for better paint adhesion and stronger bonding to surfaces.
  • Less pollution (dust, particles, polluted water, etc.) than mechanical methods.
  • Free of all contaminations.
  • Keeps surface integrity.
  • Does not require cleaning.

Surface preparation affects production quality, maintenance costs, and equipment lifespan.

For facility owners and businesses, choosing between laser cleaning and traditional surface prep methods directly impacts throughput, labor demands, and operating conditions.

Traditional methods such as abrasive blasting, chemical cleaning, grinding, and manual scraping have served industrial operations for decades.

However, modern production environments now demand tighter process control, cleaner work areas, and more efficient maintenance strategies.

Laser cleaning has emerged as a practical alternative for companies that need precision and repeatability without the drawbacks associated with consumable-heavy cleaning methods.
